This week's storytime basket theme was BUGS!  This was a really fun basket.  I had a big age range for storytime today so I tried to select books that would appeal to babies AND second graders so I went for books with interactive elements and humor.

And now, a bug joke:

A man had a pet centipede. He said, “centipede, go get the paper and make it snappy!”
A half an hour later the man went outside and said, “I thought I told you to get the paper a half an hour ago!”
“Well, I had to put on my shoes,” said the centipede.
PRE-STORYTIME MUSIC
These are the songs that we listened to before storytime began.  If you are interested in checking out these songs, the album cover images are linked to Amazon so you can listen to a sample recording and/or purchase these great songs!

PRE-STORYTIME ACTIVITY
I hid a picture of a fly, caterpillar, and an ant.  Participants looked for the bugs before storytime began. It was fun to see the caregivers helping their kiddos find the bugs!

HELLO SONG

TO THE TUNE OF: JOLLY GOOD FELLOW
We’ll wave hello together,
We’ll wave hello together,
We’ll wave hello together,
Because it’s fun to do.

We’ll give a hug together,
We’ll give a hug together,
We’ll give a hug together,
Because it’s kind to do.

We’ll high five together,
We’ll high five together,
We’ll high five together,
Because it’s fun to do.
LETTER OF THE WEEK: B
This week's letter of the week was the letter B.  We bounced a basketball, we flapped our wings like a butterfly, and we counted how many B's were in the word baseball bat.

BOOKS
I'm Trying to Love Spiders is full of fun spider facts.  Since I had some little people in the audience, I skipped the part about venom and spider bites.  I invited participants to clap their hands to help me "smush" the spider.

I came up with a song for Old Black Fly and recorded a small part of it (down below).  I invited participants to say "Shoo fly, shoo fly, shoo!" with me.

Can You Make a Scary Face?  is a really fun interactive book.  One of the little people in the audience was very concerned about the ladybug's safety when the big hungry frog showed up.  It was very sweet.

Spider Crawl
The spider’s crawling on my leg,
Where will they go?
There is no use in asking me-
Only the spider knows!   (jump the spider to a different body part)
Now the spider’s on my ____   (identify body part)
Where will they go?
There is no use in asking me –
Only the spider knows!       (repeat, jumping spider to other part)

The Bugs in the Yard
TO THE TUNE OF: THE WHEELS ON THE BUS

The ladybugs in the yard have lots of spots.
Lots of spots, lots of spots.
The ladybugs in the yard have lots of sports.
Out in the yard.

The fireflies at night go blink, blink, blink.
Blink, blink, blink.  Blink, blink, blink.
The fireflies at night go blink, blink, blink.
Out in the yard.

The bees in the flowers go buzz, buzz, buzz.
Buzz, buzz, buzz.  Buzz, buzz, buzz.
The bees in the flowers go buzz, buzz, buzz.
Out in the yard.

The crickets in the fields go chirp, chirp, chirp.
Chirp, chirp, chirp.  Chirp, chirp, chirp.
The crickets in the fields go chirp, chirp, chirp.
Out in the yard.

The ants in the grass go march, march, march.
March, march, march.  March, march, march.
The ants in the grass go march, march, march.
Out in the yard.

The spiders in the bush, they spin their webs.
Spin their webs.  Spin their webs.
The spiders in the bush, they spin their webs.
Out in the yard.

Five Little Bees
One little bee flew and flew.
They made a friend, and that made two.

Two little bees, busy as could be
Along came another, and that made three.

Three little bees, wanted one more,
Found one soon and that made four.

Four little bees, going to their hive.
Spied another friend, and that made five.

Five little bees working every hour
Buzz away, bees, and find another flower.
GOODBYE SONG: SAY GOODBYE
