Tales for 2's & 3's: Fall IV

Today was more of a monster theme than a fall theme.  I saw a lot of adorable costumes in storytime today- a panda, a few princesses, a few superheroes, a pumpkin, and a lion.

I opted for a Book Fairy costume because I wanted an excuse to own a hot pink tulle skirt.

We had a lot of fun with egg shakers and with yelling “Go AWAY!” at the big green monster.

Click here for today’s storytime outline.

Halloween countdown: 5 more days!!!!!!!!!  SO EXCITED!!!! All of the EXCITEMENT!  (breathes)  I can do this.  (internally squeeing because my favorite day of the year is almost here).

Today's storytime was RAWRSOME! We went on a monster hunt, we roared, we stomped, we danced, and we read fabulous monster books!

And now, a monster joke:
Q: What tree-monster prowls the forest?
A: Frankenpine.
Pre-Storytime Music
These are the songs that we listened to before storytime began.  If you are interested in checking out these songs, the album cover images are linked to Amazon so you can listen to a sample and/or purchase these great songs!

Pre-Storytime Activity: Monster Discussion
Today's pre-storytime activity involved these adorable monsters from Picklebums.  I wanted to focus on the "talk" portion of ECRR2.  Before I officially began storytime, we did a quick vote of our favorite monster.  The red/orange won was the winner.
Letter of the Week: Mm
Our letter of the week this week was the letter Mm.  We talked about the different items in the collage, roared like monsters, and recited "Hey Didddle, Diddle."

October Book & Cookie Club: Book Scavenger

10/24/2018

Picture
Book and Cookie Club is a monthly book discussion group for students in third through sixth grade and an adult caregiver.  I have been facilitating Book and Cookie Club at my library since December of 2015.  This is one of my favorite school-age programs to plan and lead.
The Book
Our book for this month was Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman
What's Your Book Scavenger Name?
The Crew came up with their Book Scavenger name using the formula on the “What’s Your Book Scavenger Name” sheet.  The Crew found the first letter of their first name and the first letter of their last name on the grid to get their Book Scavenger name.
Picture
Book Scavenger Hunt
The Crew worked in groups of 3-4 to answer questions, solve puzzles, ciphers, magic squares, decode secret messages & more!  Their goal was to locate books that were disguised in bookstumes and hidden around the children's department.
Bookstumes
My coworkers helped me create bookstumes for 24 different books to "hide" in.  15 minutes prior to Book and Cookie, I went out into our department and hid the books for The Crew to find.

The books that we used for this Book Scavenger Hunt were ARCs and books (in good condition) that were being withdrawn from our collection.  The Crew was allowed to keep the books that they found.
Photo Booth
Picture
Picture
Emily and James fought the first day of school jitters by taking silly photos.  I set up a "photo booth" with props from Target's Dollar Spot and some odds & ends that we had hanging around our department.

I am having so much fun with Tales for 2's & 3's this fall!

We had an absolute blast today with the scarves.  I decided that it would be fun to use fall colored scarfs today.  It was so lovely to see a flurry of reds, oranges, and yellows floating around the program room!

Graphic created with PicMonkey. Clipart from Krista Wallden of Creative Clips.
It's the most wonderful time of the year!  FALL!  I love this time of year with all of my heart.  I love fall and Halloween more than my own birthday.  Fall means coziness - soft cuddly blankets, well-loved hoodies, and my husband's delicious molasses cookies that make our home smell wonderfully spicy.  There is also the wonderful seasonal color changes that happen during this time of year.  I love seeing the vast array of oranges, reds, and yellows in the trees and bushes.

There is so much to love about this time of year and I look forward to all of the amazing books, rhymes, and songs that I get to share and sing to celebrate my favorite time of year!

From the Mailbox's Songs & Rhymes on Parade, p. 13

On the hill where the corn grows tall,

I see a scarecrow that is made of straw.

When the wind blows, his arms will wiggle.

And then his little legs start to jiggle.

He scares away all the crows on the hill,

And when the wind stops, he holds very still.

Going to Kentucky
I was going to Kentucky
Going to the fair
to see the senorita with the flower in her hair
Oh shake it, shake it, shake it
Shake it if you can
Shake it like a milkshake
And do the best you can
Oh wobble to the bottom
and wobble to the top
And turn around and turn around
until you make a stop.
Letter of the Week: Tt
To introduce the letter of the week, I had a star finger puppet that I greeted all of the kiddos with when they came into the room.  I asked the kids if there was a song that we could sing about the star.  We sang "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."  After we finished singing, I mentioned that the word twinkle begins with the letter T.  Then we talked about different animals and items that start with the letter T (I have pictures that I put up on the flannel board for this part).
