Family Storytime: Star Wars Reads Day

Dun dun dun daaaaaaa daaaaaaaa lalala laaaaaaaa laaaaa lalala laaaaaaaa laaaaa ladela laaaaaaa!  In a library far far away, Star Wars Reads Day 2018 finally arrived.

The highlights of my day included: a one year old dressed up as Chewbacca (cute factor x 1,000) during storytime, having another excuse to bust out my strobe light, and getting to see all of the excited faces.
Pre-Storytime Music
These are the songs that we listened to before storytime began.  If you are interested in checking out these songs, the album cover images are linked to Amazon so you can listen to a sample and/or purchase these great songs!

Introduction
I used a Jedi Name Generator to create my Jedi name for storytime today.    I wanted my introduction to be in the Star Wars Reads Day spirit, so this is what I said: "Hello Jedi, Padawans, Ewoks, Wookiees, and Droids! My name is Jedi Lawni Curos and I will be leading this morning’s Star Wars Reads Day storytime!"
Recorded Music
These are the songs that we danced to during storytime.  If you are interested in checking out these songs, the album cover images are linked to Amazon so you can listen to a sample and/or purchase these great songs!

September Book & Cookie Club: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

9/26/2018

Picture
Book and Cookie Club is a monthly book discussion group for students in third through sixth grade and an adult caregiver.  I have been facilitating Book and Cookie Club at my library since December of 2015.  This is one of my favorite school-age programs to plan and lead.

Our book for this month was "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" by Grace Lin.  This is one of my favorite middle-grade fantasy novels.  I also recommend the audiobook for this book as well!
Create a Dragon
Picture
Our discussion game this month involved the neatest dragon floor puzzle I have ever seen and some questions that I wrote and put into a Google Slide presentation.  When The Crew answered a question correctly, they were able to select a puzzle piece from the box.  I liked that this discussion game had a cooperation component to it.  Everyone had to work together to assemble our awesome dragon.
Monkeys in a Barrel
Picture
One of my favorite parts of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is when Minli, our brave and clever heroine, tricks the greedy monkeys in the forest.  So, we played Monkeys in a Barrel.
Paper Lanterns
Picture
The Crew made paper lanterns.  I found instructions on how to make the paper lanterns on Teachers Pay Teachers.
Minli's Bag Word Find
I made a word find with all of the items that Minli packed into her bag before she left to find the Old Man of the Moon.  I used this Word Search Maker on The Teacher's Corner to generate the wordsearch.

Today I used the stretchy band for the first time in a storytime program.  The kiddos had a blast!  I must admit, I did too!  Who would have throught that a giant rubberband covered in rainbow fabric could be so fun?

Welcome Song: Sing with Me
from Let's Do It Again (p. 112) by Mary Helen Richards of the Richards Institute of Education and Research

This song comes from a music-based literacy approach that I have been studying called Education Through Music.  I like to add in different actions like creep, wiggle, bounce, etc.   I consider it a double bonus when I can add in some moves that get the littles to cross the midline!
Sing with me, all together,
sing with me, all together,
sing with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

Stomp with me, all together,
stomp with me, all together,
stomp with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

Twist with me, all together,
twist with me, all together,
twist with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

Wave with me, all together,
wave with me, all together,
wave with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

High Stepping Horses
from Let's Do It Again (p. 48) by Mary Helen Richards of the Richards Institute of Education and Research

This is another Education Through Music song.  I have the children's arms become high stepping horses and we make the horse step high on our laps, heads, legs, floor, etc.
High stepping horses,
High stepping horses,
High stepping horses go
jiggety jiggety jog.

High stepping horses,
High stepping horses,
High stepping horses go
jiggety jiggety jog.

The Wheels on the Bus: Stretchy Band Version
The wheels on the bus go round and round (make a rowing motion with the stretchy band)
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus round and round
All through the town

The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish (move stretchy band right to left)
Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish
The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish
All through the town

The people on the bus go up and down (move stretchy band up and down)
Up and down, up and down
The people on the bus go up and down
All through the town

The wheels on the bus go round and round (make a rowing motion with the stretchy band)
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus round and round
All through the town

Going to Kentucky
from Jbrary
*Note: We sang this song with the stretchy band. We bounced the stretchy band up and down to the beat of the chant.  When we got to the "shake it, shake it, shake it" part we wiggled the stretchy band.

I was going to Kentucky
Going to the fair
to see the senorita
with the flower in her hair
Oh shake it, shake it, shake it
Shake it if you can
Shake it like a milkshake
And do the best you can
Row, Row, Row Your Boat
Row, row, row your boat (make rowing motion with stretchy band)
Gently down the stream
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Life is but a dream.

Goodbye Song: Now It's Time to Say Goodbye
from Carole Peterson's Tiny Tunes album
Picture
* Note: I prefer to sing this without the recording because I don't have time to play the whole song.

To the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb
Adapted by Nicole Lawton

Now it's time to touch your toes
touch your toes, touch your toes
Now it's time to touch your toes
Touch them now

Family Storytime: School

Picture
The 2018 - 2019 school year is upon us!  The teacher in me always gets excited about all of the school supplies in the store.  I still wander the Target Dollar Spot looking for cute pens and pencils because I need to have a purple pen with cat ears or a mechanical pencil with a llama eraser.  If I were a dragon, I'd hoard cute school supplies. #ExTeacherConfessions

While the kiddos (and maybe some of the teachers) may not be quite ready to go back to school, I know that I am looking forward to my last year of grad school!

Today we had lots of fun with egg shakers in Tales for 2's and 3's!

I am a big believer in using the same songs for the whole month or even the whole session. Repetition is really great for this age group and it also helps the caregivers become familiar with the songs so they can feel confident to use them at home!

I'm baaaaaaaaack!  This week, I will be updating the blog with backdated posts going all the way back to July!

This summer was a little busier than I anticipated- between gradschool, work, and moving - this little blog was put on the back burner.

Now that things have settled down a bit (and some of the unpacking has been done at the new Lodge), I can finally write and share my posts about all of the great programs that I was lucky to be part of this summer!

As the new posts go up, I will update this post with direct links so that you won't miss anything!

Cheers!

Graphic created on PicMonkey. Clipart from Krista Wallden of Creative Clips.
Bookish friends, I read Book with No Pictures for the first time in storytime today.  If you haven't read it in a storytime yet- DO IT!  It was so much FUN! I really committed to the silliness and the storytime crowd was beside themselves.

Speaking of fun - our theme for today's storytime was FUN!  This was a riotously funny, interactive, and exciting storytime to present.  I had an absolute blast singing, laughing, and playing with my storytime friends today.

We are back to our regularly scheduled programming!  This fall, I am leading our Wednesday Tales for 2's and 3's storytime.  It is a 20 minute long program for two and three year olds and their adult caregivers.

Our theme for this month is Marvelous Me.

Songs

Opening Song: Sing With Me
from Let's Do It Again (p. 112) by Mary Helen Richards of the Richards Institute of Education and Research
This song comes from a music based literacy approach that I have been studying called Education Through Music.  I like to add in different actions like creep, wiggle, bounce, etc.
I consider it a double bonus when I can add in some moves that get the littles to cross the midline!
Sing with me, all together,
sing with me, all together,
sing with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

Stomp with me, all together,
stomp with me, all together,
stomp with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

Twist with me, all together,
twist with me, all together,
twist with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

Wave with me, all together,
wave with me, all together,
wave with me, all together,
won't you be my darling?

High Stepping Horses
from Let's Do It Again (p. 48) by Mary Helen Richards of the Richards Institute of Education and Research
This is another Education Through Music song.  I have the children's arms become high stepping horses and we make the horse step high on our laps, heads, legs, floor, etc.
High stepping horses,
High stepping horses,
High stepping horses go
jiggety jiggety jog.

High stepping horses,
High stepping horses,
High stepping horses go
jiggety jiggety jog.
We Wave Our Scarves Together
from Jbrary
We wave our scarves together
We wave our scarves together
We wave our scarves together
because it's fun to do.
Wave them up high
Wave them down low
Wave them in the middle
Because it's fun to do.
Goodbye Song: Time To Say Goodbye
from Carole Peterson's Tiny Tunes album

I prefer to sing this without the recording because I don't have time to play the whole song.

To the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb
Adapted by Nicole Lawton

Now it's time to touch your toes
touch your toes, touch your toes
Now it's time to touch your toes
Touch them now

Now it's time to touch your nose
touch your nose, touch your nose
Now it's time to touch your nose
Touch it now

Now it's time to touch your head
touch your head, touch your head
Now it's time to touch your head
Touch it now

Now it's time to wave goodbye
Wave goodbye, Wave goodbye
Now it's time to wave goodbye

Action Rhymes

Ten Friends
From Multicultural Storytime Magic (adapted)

One is fun
But two is better.
Three friends, four friends
Play together.
Under the Big Chestnut Tree
From Multicultural Storytime Magic

Under the big chestnut tree,
You and I play happily,
Under the big chestnut tree.
First I’ll Find a Foot
Credit:  Pierce County Library System

First I find a foot,
and I hop, hop, hop. (stand on one foot and hop)
Then when I get tired,
I stop, stop, stop. (make stop motion with hand)
Turn around and
count to ten. (turn around)
Then I find a foot,
And I hop again. (hop on other foot)

Letter of the Week: Cc

I created a handout for caregivers that have some ideas for activities that they could do at home with their child based on the letter of the week.
