Outcome 4A: Apply library and information science theories, principles, and research to professional practice
In LIS 701 Introduction to Library and Information Science, I wrote a research paper that addressed the importance of integrating early literacy skills in children’s library programming and storytimes. I examined various early literacy programs, including The Preschool Literacy Initiative, Play & Read, Better Beginnings, and Every Child Ready to Read.
I incorporate the five early literacy skills of Every Child Ready to Read into my programming: singing, playing, talking, reading, and writing. In my Tales for 2’s and 3’s and family storytime programs, for example, we introduce a letter of the week. I also create handouts for caregivers with suggestions for incorporating that week’s letter into their child’s daily activities.
