GOAL 2: UNDERSTANDING INFORMATION

Understand the essential nature of information and its relevance to society.
Outcome 2B:  Explain the impact of information policies on intellectual freedom, access, literacy, information behavior, and other aspects of library and information science.
In LIS 703 Organization of Knowledge, we examined how library catalogs have changed and adapted throughout history.   I investigated how Library of Congress Subject Headers impact the user’s ability to locate materials through their library’s OPAC.  Although libraries want their collections to be accessible to their patrons, outdated or offensive Library of Congress Subject Headers can negatively impact a library user’s ability to find information through their OPAC.

I served on the Diversity Team at the Naperville Library as part of our organization’s Strategic Plan.  I was tasked with assessing the effectiveness of our OPAC using searchable keywords.  Using the knowledge I gained from LIS 703 and this assignment, I compiled a list of suggested local keywords for our library to use so our diverse community of users will be better able to access materials and information.
