Why do books matter? They offer opportunities for children to see themselves in a story's character as well as peek into someone else's life.
Why does that matter? Building empathy and kindness in children will help them get along better with others.
I have collected titles that gently teach empathy, self acceptance, and kindness to children. These are books that I have either used in my own storytimes or have been recommended to me by my fellow librarians.
The books have been organized by age groups. As you explore the titles, please take note that some of the books can fit more than one category or be used for a wider age range. The range is primarily intended to be a minimum age guideline.
My hope is to update these lists regularly. I plan to evaluate and review new books as they come into publication as well as books that have been around longer. There are some time-tested books on the lists because either nothing comparable exists or the message of that book still rings true today.
